Will your SUV make the side-entry garage turn?
An SUV can fit comfortably inside a garage and still be awkward to get through the 90° approach. The parked footprint answers one question; the turning envelope answers another. GarageTurn models the maneuver using the dimensions that actually change the path.
The four SUV numbers that matter most
| Input | Why it matters | Use this value |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | Longer body corners sweep farther during alignment. | Bumper-to-bumper length from the manufacturer. |
| Body width | Controls how much of the clear opening the vehicle occupies. | Body width; check mirrors separately. |
| Wheelbase | Changes how the front and rear portions rotate around the turn. | Axle-to-axle wheelbase. |
| Turning circle | Approximates how tightly the vehicle can steer at low speed. | Prefer curb-to-curb diameter when that is what the maker publishes. |
Do not design around the word “SUV”
Two vehicles sold as SUVs can have very different wheelbases, overhangs and turning circles. A compact crossover may behave more like a car, while a long three-row model can approach pickup-like maneuvering space. That is why GarageTurn does not keep a make/model database: the simulator is more transparent when you enter the actual dimensions you verified.
What to change when the result is tight
- Compare reverse-in and forward-in. The leading body corner changes, so the better direction is not always obvious.
- Retest the hard opposite boundary. A fence, curb, wall or landscaping edge defines usable apron depth more accurately than the overall paved slab.
- Test the clear door opening. Wider openings can reduce jamb conflict, but they do not automatically solve a shallow apron.
- Keep a real safety margin. A geometric pass with almost zero clearance is not a comfortable everyday maneuver.
Buying a larger SUV?
Save the current vehicle as Scenario 1, enter the candidate vehicle as Scenario 2, and compare both with the same driveway. This turns a vague “will the new SUV fit?” question into a repeatable layout comparison before you buy or remodel.
Also planning for a pickup? Use the truck guide for the longer-wheelbase stress case, or read reverse vs forward entry if direction is the main question.
Frequently asked questions
Is a wider garage door always better for an SUV turn?
A wider clear opening can improve jamb clearance, but the opposite driveway boundary and vehicle turning geometry may still be the limiting factor. Test both opening width and apron depth.
Should mirrors be included in SUV width?
Use body width for the main GarageTurn geometry, then separately verify mirror clearance because mirrors may fold and do not follow the exact body-corner envelope.
Can I compare two SUVs?
Yes. Save each vehicle/layout result to the comparison board and keep the garage dimensions the same to isolate the vehicle difference.
