Before you pour the driveway: verify the turn while changes are still cheap.
Concrete, curbs, retaining walls and landscaping turn flexible dimensions into expensive constraints. Before the driveway is poured, use the design stage to prove that the regular vehicle can reach the garage with comfortable room—not just that the parking bay is large enough once the vehicle is inside.
1. Freeze the finished opening dimension
Confirm the clear passage after jambs, tracks, trim and door hardware—not just the rough opening or product label. If the opening is still provisional, model a conservative dimension and rerun the final number before construction.
2. Mark the opposite hard boundary
Identify the first boundary the vehicle cannot cross: curb, wall, fence, retaining edge, landscaping, another parking bay or a drop-off. Measure apron depth perpendicular to the garage face.
3. Test the largest regular vehicle
Use the vehicle that must work every day. If a larger SUV or pickup is likely during the life of the project, compare it now. Do not optimize a permanent site around the smallest current car if the household’s realistic use is broader.
4. Run more than one scenario
- Current vehicle + planned opening + planned apron.
- Same vehicle with a smaller real-world safety margin removed from the usable space by trim or obstacles.
- Forward-in and reverse-in.
- A plausible future larger vehicle.
- A scenario with the finished hard boundary in its most conservative location.
5. Check conditions GarageTurn does not model
| Condition | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Slope / grade break | Can change bumper clearance, steering feel and usable line. |
| Drainage swales | May make part of the apparent apron unusable. |
| Posts / columns / bollards | Create local hard points not represented by a simple rectangular opening. |
| Snow storage / bins | Seasonal or daily objects can consume the design margin. |
| Gate position | Can reduce setup distance before the turn. |
6. Do a physical mock-up when the result is close
Cones, chalk, tape or temporary stakes can represent the garage face, opening and opposite edge in a safe open area. Drive the actual vehicle at walking speed. A mock-up cannot replace professional design where required, but it can expose awkward daily-use issues a dimensioned plan hides.
7. Separate geometry from code
A turn that works geometrically can still conflict with local requirements for setbacks, driveway width, fire access, drainage or parking. Check those rules independently with the appropriate local authority or designer.

Frequently asked questions
When should I physically test a garage turn before construction?
A physical mock-up is especially valuable when the modeled clearance is close to your safety target, when the site has unusual obstacles or slope, or when a permanent design decision depends on only a few inches.
Can GarageTurn replace a site plan or engineering review?
No. GarageTurn is a planning and comparison tool. Local code, drainage, structural design and critical swept-path verification should be handled separately where needed.
