Single doors or one double door: which is easier to turn into?
The choice affects more than curb appeal. For a side-entry approach, a pair of single doors introduces a center pier and two narrower targets. One double-width door removes the center obstacle and creates a larger continuous opening—but structural design, door hardware and interior parking layout still matter.
| Layout | Turning benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Two single doors | Each bay can operate independently and can visually organize parking. | Center pier becomes a hard obstacle; each approach must line up with a narrower opening. |
| One double door | Large continuous clear opening gives more lateral freedom during the turn. | Heavier/wider door system; structural header and wind-load design can be more demanding. |
Why the center pier matters
During a 90° approach, the vehicle is not perfectly aligned with the garage until late in the maneuver. A center pier can become the critical inside corner even when the final parked bay is wide enough. This is why two 9 ft doors do not behave like one 18 ft clear opening.
A double opening can reduce alignment pressure
With a continuous opening, the vehicle can cross the wall plane at a larger angle and center itself farther inside the garage. The gain depends on the apron and vehicle path, so use the actual clear width in the simulator rather than assuming a double door automatically fixes a tight site.
Two singles can still be the right design
Separate doors may be preferable for architecture, energy use, redundancy or interior organization. If you choose them, model the bay you actually need to enter and treat the center pier as part of the opening boundary. If the pier is wide, measure to its finished face—not to the framing centerline.
How to compare layouts before construction
- Sketch the same garage depth and apron for both concepts.
- Use the intended clear opening for one single bay and run the largest regular vehicle.
- Save that scenario.
- Run the continuous double opening with the same vehicle and apron.
- Compare clearance, not just a pass/fail label.

Frequently asked questions
Are two 9 ft garage doors equivalent to one 18 ft door for turning?
No. Two single doors usually have a center pier, so the vehicle must enter one narrower opening. One continuous double opening provides a different turning envelope.
Does a double garage door always need less driveway space?
Not always. A wider opening can help at the garage corner, but the opposite driveway boundary and the vehicle turning circle can still be the limiting constraints.
