How much driveway room does a side-entry garage need?

The useful question is not “what is the standard driveway width?” It is “how much hard, unobstructed maneuvering space does this vehicle need to align with this opening?”

Apron depth is the key side-entry dimension

For a garage door on the side of the driveway, measure perpendicular from the garage face to the opposite hard limit. That may be a curb, wall, fence, landscaped island, property restriction or edge you do not want to drive over.

Why a few feet can change everything

A tight 90° turn is sensitive to radius. Extra apron depth allows the vehicle to begin and complete the arc without the rear or front corner sweeping beyond the paved area. The effect is especially noticeable on long-wheelbase SUVs and pickups.

Door width and apron depth trade off

A wider garage opening gives the vehicle more room to cross the wall plane before it is perfectly aligned. A deeper apron gives more room to rotate before the vehicle reaches the opening. If a design is close, test both dimensions rather than assuming only the driveway must grow.

Do not design to zero clearance

Use a target margin that reflects how the driveway will actually be used. A daily family vehicle needs a more forgiving path than an occasional carefully spotted maneuver.
